NJ Professional Development Overview

New Jersey Professional Standards, adopted by the State Board of Education in December 2003, provide a clear vision of the knowledge, performance, and dispositions that teachers and school leaders need to support student learning and achievement of the revised Core Curriculum Content Standards.

To be in compliance with state requirements, each teacher must complete 100 hours of state-approved continuing professional development and/or in-service training every five years. This training includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Affirmative action / Equity issues
  • Special education
  • Child abuse and neglect (NJAC 6A:16-11)
  • Suicide prevention (NJSA 18A:6-112)
  • Substance abuse awareness (NJSA 18A:40A-15)
  • Handling blood and body fluids
  • Possible hazardous substances in the workplace
  • Responding to crisis
  • Bullying, intimidation, and harassment (NJAC 6A:16-7.1,,7,7.9(d) )
  • School violence

NCADD developed the Professional Development Training for Educators series in response to the State Department of Education’s requirements that faculty and staff receive specific subject matter training to support the maintenance of a healthy and safe school community. The courses reference New Jersey state and federal mandates, as well as school policies and procedures related to each subject area.
